Following the return of Indira Gandhi to power at the Centre in January 1980, the central government dismissed MGR's elected state ministry under Article 356. In the ensuing May 1980 election, MGR formed a coalition with the CPI(M) and CPI. The people of Tamil Nadu decisively rejected the central government's anti-democratic dismissal. AIADMK won 129 seats, CPM won 11, and CPI won 9, giving the coalition a solid 149 seats. MGR returned triumphant as Chief Minister.
