Political Context, Seat Bargaining & Legislative Impact (1977)
Founded in October 1972 by cinema icon M. G. Ramachandran after breaking away from the DMK, the AIADMK contested its first state Assembly election in June 1977. In a four-cornered fight against the DMK, Congress, and Janata Party, MGR's charismatic appeal among the rural masses, working class, and women voters produced a historic mandate. AIADMK won 130 seats, CPM won 5, and minor allies won 5, giving MGR an absolute majority with 140 seats. MGR was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the very first time.
