The upcoming Madurantakam Assembly by-election has opened up a fresh political discussion in Tamil Nadu, with the possible role of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) becoming a key talking point.

AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) is looking to strengthen his party's position in the constituency, while attention has turned towards PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and the stand his party may take in the by-election.

EPS Looking for PMK Support

The AIADMK had entered the 2026 Assembly election with PMK as part of its alliance. PMK formally joined the AIADMK-BJP alliance in January 2026, with EPS and Anbumani Ramadoss jointly announcing the arrangement.

However, the political equation has changed considerably since the Assembly election.

With the Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections now scheduled for October 6, the question of whether PMK will extend support to AIADMK has once again become important.

Recent reports suggest that the AIADMK is keen to secure PMK’s support in Madurantakam, where the party believes PMK’s local vote base could influence the final result.

What Will Anbumani Decide?

This is where the uncertainty begins.

The exact stand that Anbumani Ramadoss and the PMK will take in the Madurantakam by-election remains a major question. A clear decision in favour of AIADMK could strengthen EPS’s campaign, while a different political strategy could alter the electoral calculations.

The situation is particularly significant because the by-election is shaping up as a multi-cornered contest involving AIADMK, DMK, TVK and other political forces.

A Setback for EPS?

The headline question of whether Anbumani has given EPS a "shock" should be viewed carefully.

There is currently no confirmed evidence that PMK has formally rejected an alliance with AIADMK for the by-election. What is clear is that AIADMK is looking for PMK support, while the PMK’s final position remains a matter of political interest.

For EPS, getting the support of PMK could be strategically important. The AIADMK has already announced Kanitha Sampath as its candidate in Madurantakam and K. Bhanumathi in Dharapuram.

Why Madurantakam Matters

Madurantakam is not just another by-election for AIADMK.

The contest is being closely watched because it could offer an early indication of how the opposition vote is positioned against the ruling TVK government.

EPS has already expressed confidence that AIADMK can retain both Madurantakam and Dharapuram.

But with TVK also fighting strongly and the DMK fielding candidates, every additional vote could become crucial.

The Alliance Question Could Decide the Battle

The coming days could therefore be important for both AIADMK and PMK.

If PMK extends support to AIADMK, EPS could gain an additional organisational and vote-base advantage. If PMK decides to maintain distance, AIADMK may have to fight the election relying primarily on its own organisation and voter base.

For now, Anbumani Ramadoss’s next political move is being watched closely.

The real answer will come when PMK officially announces its position. Until then, claims of a complete breakdown between AIADMK and PMK should be treated as political speculation rather than a confirmed development.

The Madurantakam by-election is turning into a crucial test'not only for the candidates, but also for the future political equations between AIADMK, PMK and the emerging TVK.
